The Significance of Endings: Why Expat Families Need Closure Before Moving Forward

Moving to a new country is a significant step in life, filled with mixed emotions for both adults and children. While excitement and anticipation for new adventures fill our thoughts and to-do lists, it's easy to overlook the importance of properly closing the previous chapter. Conducting a closing ceremony before embarking on a new journey abroad can have a significant impact on the psychological and emotional well-being of the entire family, especially children.

As an expat parent, I have witnessed firsthand the impact of not properly closing chapters on my children. In international schools, it's common for friends to leave every year. When families choose not to communicate about their departure, I see the difficulty my children face in understanding why their friend is not coming back. While some parents might feel that it is better to "protect" their kids from this farewell, it can actually make it harder for the child to adapt to their new home in the future, even if it is a repatriation. Without understanding that the previous chapter has come to an end, children may struggle to process the change and move forward.

Closing rituals play an important role in facilitating healthy and smooth transitions for all family members. They give us a sense of structure and continuity in times of change and loss, allowing us to honor the past while moving toward the future. For children, these rituals can be particularly important in helping them process their emotions and adapt to the upcoming changes.

Here are some reasons why a closing ceremony is essential for the whole family before moving abroad:

1. Provides a sense of completion:

Engaging in a farewell ritual allows you and your family to acknowledge and appreciate the experiences, relationships, and achievements of the chapter that is coming to a close. This provides a sense of completion, better preparing you to begin your next chapter.

2. Facilitates the grieving process

Leaving behind a familiar place, loved ones, and an established life can trigger feelings of loss and sadness for everyone, including children. A closing ritual offers a safe space for the family to process and express these emotions together, facilitating a healthy grieving process.

3. Creates a meaningful milestone

A closing ceremony serves as a clear marker between the past and the future. It represents that one chapter has ended and a new one is about to begin. This symbolic milestone can provide mental and emotional clarity during the transition, helping children understand and cope with the changes.

4. Cultivates gratitude

By reflecting on past experiences during a closing ritual, the family has the opportunity to cultivate gratitude together. Acknowledging the lessons learned, friendships formed, and precious moments lived nurtures a sense of appreciation that everyone can carry into the new journey. This also contributes to nurturing a positive mindset!

5. Sets intentions for the future

A closing ceremony can also serve as a platform for the family to set intentions for the next chapter. By articulating hopes, dreams, and goals together, the family creates a shared roadmap for navigating their new life abroad with purpose and direction.

So, how can you create a meaningful closing ritual for the whole family?

It can be as simple as gathering for a special farewell meal, or visiting your favourite places one last time. Include in your closing ritual saying good-bye to special friends and people that were important during this chapter. Encourage children to participate actively in the planning and execution of the ritual, allowing them to express their feelings and ideas.

By taking the time to consciously close a chapter before moving abroad, you are investing in the emotional well-being of the entire family and preparing for a fulfilling new beginning. Remember, every ending is a new beginning filled with limitless possibilities, and by navigating this transition together, your family will grow stronger and more resilient.
